It's summer now and I know what you are thinking - WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH MY HAIR??? With hotter days upon us, and for many of us who may be in areas of the country and world with lots of humidity and rain, maintaining our hair without being overwhelmed, tired, or irritated seems like an olympic sport; I know it's the case with me each summer. I have very thick and porous 4a hair that chooses when it wants to cooperate and as a resident of a southern state within the US, summers often mean lots of outside cookouts, evening walks in the neighborhood or park, and mornings sitting on the deck or porch. It also means my hair can go through 2-3 different styles and phases over the course of a 24-hour period.
Here are a few styles that can help you (and me) get through summertime with a bit more relaxation, confidence and ease.

Crochet Hairstyles
This is my go-to summer hairstyle and can last 2-6 weeks (or more) depending on installation, maintenance, and the crochet hair that’s used during installation. It keeps me ready for anything at anytime and I always feel put together. The best thing about crochet hair, it’s inexpensive depending on the type and brand of hair you purchase and can be one of the most economical ways to maintain your hair while also turning heads wherever you go.

Short Bob
This is one of the more higher maintenance styles but with a good hairstylist, maintenance routine, and a good head wrap at night, you can be chic, stunning and cool all summer.
Longer Length Bob or LOB
This style is also more high maintenance but if you have long hair throughout the year, this style may not only modernize your look but it may take a lot of 'weight' off; which makes for easier, cooler summer days. Also, this hairstyle just gives "Baddie"!
Natural Updo
This is more of a temporary style but if you are a silk press girly or woman and you take a break from straightening tools in the summer, this style offers you options when you want to pull your hair up and off of your neck (in the south we know this all too well) or when you have a more formal event to attend. It's also a great date night hairstyle and looks good with any outfit, day or night.
Tapered Natural Crown Cut
This is one of the best summer (and frankly, year long) hairstyles because it offers the freedom of wearing your natural hair while also being an elegant framing style for most face shapes. This style also looks good with any outfit and can last through rain, dry heat, humidity, and a lovely breezy day. And the best part, outside of color maintenance (if you choose to do that), it can be pretty easy to maintain with a good hairstylist and daily moisturizer for coils and curls.
Short Haircut
This is a more higher maintenance hair style but like other shorter hair cuts, it allows for much more cooler days and can offer a welcomed change to your look at any age. Also, if you are someone who wants to move from relaxer or chemicals to natural, getting a short haircut in the summer is probably the best time to do it!
Pixie Cut
Now this is a high maintenance style but the ROI (return on investment) in time and cost for a good hairstylist is ten fold. I've never seen a pixie cut done well that I didn't like. And there's something so feminine and elegant about a woman who wears one. If you have money, time, and a good hairstylist, GET IT!!!!
Braided Wig
Probably the most low maintenance hairstyle on this list because it's a wig. Just put it on and go (the installation may require a good stylist who specializes in wigs or lots of YouTube video research). Make sure you do a good wash, deep conditioner, trim, and foundation set before sticking to a wig routine. Taking care of the hair under the wig is just as important as taking care of the hair on top! You can find one that’s really cute HERE.
Braid Hairstyles
While braid hair styles may take time to install, they usually last for weeks and with good maintenance, upkeep, and taking care of your scalp in-between, it makes for a fun-filled, worry-free summer. And let's admit it, swimming and enjoying the ocean just feels so different (in the best way) with braids!
Knotless Braids (small)
Knotless Braids (medium)
Knotless Braids (large)
Boho Braids
Victorian Updo
This is a temporary style but like the natural updo above, it is an elegant way to look polished and put together for any event and any outfit. It also doesn't require you to put chemicals on your hair. Just get a good hairstylist (or if you are a DIYer like me, just watch many Youtube videos) and you're good to go!

As with any hairstyle, take your time to see what works for you. It may take several hairstyles to find one or two that you love. One of the best tips I've received about hairstyles is to go to a neighborhood beauty supply store and try on different wigs. While it may not be exactly what you will look like with that hairstyle, it will give you an idea of how a style or hair color can look on you. And let's also remember, you have the freedom to change your hair anytime you want; so if it doesn't work, change it!
