The Best Mascara I've Ever Used

The first time I used mascara was when I was 16 and bought my first department store mascara. It was a famous popular brand that is known for their products that target sensitive skin. Because of my own sensitive eyes, I needed to find a quality mascara that didn't irritate my eyes or feel heavy, and that mascara worked very well for me; the only thing - it was costly. Years later, I was at an event with a Mary Kay Consultant and she raved about the Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara. I was skeptical due to my eye sensitivity but I bought it, tried it and I must say - it is the BEST mascara I have ever used.

Black Brown Mary Kay Mascara

Over the years I've sampled and bought many different brands of mascara and as a beauty enthusiast, I'm not ashamed of that at all. My product tests have allowed me to catalogue the mascaras that work for me and if I am ever in a pinch and I have to choose something based on where I am (location or finances), I always know the options that will work best. So here's what I've learned when looking for mascara:

1. Does the brand have generally good reviews?

If you see a lot of 1 or 2 stars, it may not be a good brand and you may need to do more research to determine if that's the brand for you.

2. Does the brand have the color you want?

This is pretty self-explanatory, but a reminder to shop for the color that you desire and that looks good on you. You can use your eye color, hair color, and/or eyebrow color to determine what works best. To learn about what mascara color may look best on you, read this article

3. Do you have sensitive eyes?

If you have sensitive eyes like me, look for mascaras that are gentle, hypoallergenic, and free of irritating ingredients like fragrance, parabens, and certain preservatives (make sure you research preservatives that may be irritating or damaging to your eyes and your health).

I hope this post helps you get started on your own mascara journey or at least makes it a little easier the next time you're staring at a shelf full of options. Trust me, I’ve been there more times than I can count. Mascara can be tricky, but once you find that one, it really does make all the difference.

At the end of the day, it’s about what feels good on you and works for your lifestyle. You don’t have to break the bank to find something that makes your lashes pop without making your eyes water.

If you’ve got a go-to mascara you swear by, or if you have one that totally flopped, I want to hear about it.

The Beauty of Starting Over: No Matter Your Age

When I turned 40, I experienced something like a rebirth. The way I thought I  should  have felt at 20 - that excitement, confidence, and sense of endless possibility - I finally felt it at 40. It was as if the world had opened wide, and I could truly be and do whatever I wanted. I remember the days leading up to my 40th birthday were heavy - solemn, reflective, even tinged with melancholy and regret. But when I woke up on that morning, I felt something completely different: Gratitude  for another year of life, Joy  knowing I would celebrate intimately with close friends, and Motivation  from the awareness that no day is promised to any of us. That realization pushed me to look at myself with fresh eyes—to believe in myself in the way I should have long before 40. The Result? This Blog and My Permission to Build the Life I Desire Now in my early 40s, I’m leaning into my dream of starting a beauty and lifestyle brand. I’m stepping fully into the woman I once hid ...

I'm A Slug: The Skincare Trend that Changed My Routine

Photo Credit: https://unsplash.com/ If you haven't heard the term "slugging", you've come to the right place. About five years ago I was doing my morning TikTok scroll and a young lady came on my screen doing a 'Get Ready With Me' morning vlog and she had the most beautiful skin I had seen. As I watched the video, she focused a lot on her skincare and over time as I watched more of her videos she talked about her journey with acne, scars, and unruly skin. As someone who has always been into skincare (I used to wake up at 9am and watch Jane Treacy on QVC sell Yves Rocher skincare on Saturday mornings when I was  about 10 years old and I also dreamed of the day I could by Fashion Fair cosmetics from Macy's before I became a teenager!), I am always looking for the next greatest cleanser, moisturizer, toner, serum, exfoliant - you name it. As I've gotten older and my skin has become more mature, I've learned through trial, error, and maxed out store ca...

This Chapter of Womanhood: Embracing the Now

Not too long ago, I shared some thoughts about starting over . I’ve come to truly appreciate how often we as women have the power to stop, shift, and begin again throughout our life. It may not always feel like we have those choices, especially when life is heavy or resources are tight; but even then I’ve learned that the option to “start again” or to pivot is always on the table. It might take some planning, a new strategy, or help from others, but it’s still there.  One thing I’ve always stood on both in life and on social media is this: if you want to start over or be someone different, you can and should do it - unapologetically. But  what if you want to start over so you can be who you used to be? What if you feel stuck or unhappy with who you are now and you want to get back to that girl or woman you used to know? What if you have been unable to start over or begin something new because you just can’t quite be who you used to be? She always did it; but you now, you’re h...
